Visit desk

What happens before a prescription?

Prepare a short account of what is happening.

Write down the help you are looking for. Bring a list of your medicines and supplements, your past health notes, and your questions about the proposed care.

It is fine to say that a term is new to you. Ask for the plain meaning, then ask how it applies to your situation.

Let the service know where you will be during your visit. Ask your treating professional to explain how they will review your health: by talking with you, reading your written answers, or doing both.

What needs a clearer answer?

Choosing a medicine is not a review of your health.

The Federation of State Medical Boards advises that choosing from a medicine menu cannot, by itself, justify a prescription. This advice was checked in September 2026. [a]

The federation also advises that patients must be able to put follow-up questions to their health professional. [a]

The group advises state medical boards, which oversee doctors. Its advice is not itself a law. Each state sets the rules for care there.

Ask how your answers reach the person treating you. A clear reply explains how that person reviews your health and asks for more detail.

Tests and an exam may be part of the plan.

When your health review calls for tests, the medical-board group says the doctor must arrange them or refer you to someone who can. [b]

It also says to send you for an in-person visit if a needed exam or other part of care cannot be done online. [b]

Ask what each test is meant to answer, where it happens, who reads the result, and whether its price is separate from the visit.

Leave with the next step in words you know.

  • What is the next step if a prescription is not a good fit?
  • Who answers questions after this visit?
  • How will follow-up be arranged?
  • Which parts of the proposed care are included in the fee?

A clear plan gives you something to take away and think through. Ask for it in writing if that makes it easier to read later.
